Just like people, pets need regular dental care. Performing a dental prophylaxis in pets will allow us to clean plaque and tartar off your pets teeth, assess any cavities or tooth decay and if any extractions are needed. Your pet is put under a general anesthetic to ensure proper cleaning and assessment, with a technician constantly monitoring their heart rate, respiration rate and blood pressure during the procedure. We also collect a blood sample to run a blood profile to ensure there are no underlying infections or issues with organs (ie: kidneys, liver). The veterinarian does a pre-exam and listens to your pets heart prior to anesthetic as well. Poor dental hygiene causes bacteria to get into the bloodstream and can lead to:
- Liver disease
- Heart disease
- Lung disease
- Kidney disease
You can maintain your pets dental hygiene at home!
The easiest way to maintain good dental hygiene in pets is to feed a dental diet. We carry two different brands of dental diets and treats and our staff would be happy to help you find one that best suits your pet! We also have a water additive to help with oral health!
We recommend brushing your pets teeth regularly with a canine or feline toothbrush and pet toothpaste. It is important not use human toothpaste as it has additives that can be toxic to pets. One of our technicians would be happy to show you how to properly brush your pets teeth and set you up with the right toothbrush and toothpaste!
These are effective measures to help with preventing dental disease, however if they already have periodontal disease or lots of tartar build up, these products will not rid them of that and a dental prophylaxis is highly recommended!
